Primary and Secondary Admission Information September 2023
Primary Admissions
You are now able to apply for a primary school place in County Durham for your child for September 2023.
Children born between 1 September 2018 and 31 August 2019 will eligible to start in Reception year.
Applications will close on Friday 15 January 2023.
Please note - a late application, i.e. after 15 January 2023, greatly reduces your chances of getting into your preferred school.
The offer of a school place will be made in April 2023.
Please visit: www.durham.gov.uk/schooladmissions where you can access a useful guide to help with your application. We encourage you to apply online wherever possible. Although restrictions have been lifted, staff will sometimes be working from home. If you are unable to apply online, paper application forms are available on request. You still need to apply even if your child attends the nursery unit attached to the school, or already has a sibling at the school. You will also need to apply for a place in Year 3 in a junior school for an older child
As in previous years, we are strongly encouraging parents/carers to apply on-line for a school place for their child.
We are stressing even more that parents should do this if they are able to, given the changes to working practices due to Covid.
All the information they need to be able to do this is available from the Council’s website from 5 September 2022:
www.durham.gov.uk/schooladmissions
Important:
The Primary and Secondary School Admission Guide advises those parents/carers who do not apply on-line for a school place to send their paper application forms to School Admissions. It also advises they may want to return it by ‘Royal Mail Signed for’ or ‘Royal Mail Special Delivery Guaranteed’ as in the event of non-receipt, proof of delivery will be required. It is even more important given the current situation with COVID-19 and changes to working practices that proof of delivery will be required.
Secondary Admissions
If your child (current Year 6) is due to transfer to Secondary School in September 2023, Parents and Carers can make their application for Secondary School online by visiting www.durham.gov.uk/schooladmissions and the School Admissions online application facility will be available to parents/carers from Monday 5th of September 2022.
The Closing Date for Secondary School Applications is the 31st October 2022.
If parents/carers do not wish to apply online they can complete a paper application form, these are available to print from the school admission website (same website address as above) from Monday 5th September 2022.
Alternatively these application forms can be requested by e-mail to schooladmissions@durham.gov.uk or by telephone from the School Admissions and Transport Team on 03000 265893.
Copies of the Parent’s guide “Primary and Secondary School Admissions in County Durham 2023/2024” are also available from the school admissions website or on request from Monday 5th September 2022.
Please note that if you have any Year 6 pupils who live in another Local Authority but attend your school, the parent/carer should contact their Home Local Authority (i.e. the authority to which they pay their council tax) to request an application form, even if the parent/carer would like to apply for a Secondary School in County Durham.
If parents/carers have any questions relating to any of the above please contact School Admissions via telephone on 03000 265893 or by
e-mail to schooladmissions@durham.gov.uk
