Our Lady and St Joseph's Brooms RCVA Primary School, Leadgate

We Learn, We Love, We Grow in Jesus' Name

Class 3

Welcome to our Class page.

Our teacher is Mrs Jackman and our Teaching Assistant is Mrs Raine.

Our PE day is Wednesday - children should come to school in their PE kits (including school jumper/cardigan) on this day.

An overview of what we will be learning over the year can be found on our Long Term Plans (Class 3).

For our Autumn term we will be learning:

Religious Education

To start the term, children will be looking at how unique they are by exploring their own qualities and talents. They will move on to discussing life choices and they will end the term learning about love and patience during advent.

Maths

In Maths, children will be learning place value, addition and subtraction, multiplication and division.

They will also continue to develop their reasoning and problem solving skills.

TT Rockstars is part of the children's weekly homework. Dojos will be given to children who participate in tournaments.

English

Our English lessons this term will be based on the text Varjak Paw; through which children will work on their writing, grammar and punctuation skills.

Our guided reading lessons are also based on the same text.

When reading this text and completing the guided reading activities, children will begin to learn new vocabulary; they will also be developing their inference and comprehension skills. All of which will help them to both enjoy and understand any text.

In addition to guided reading, we now have our accelerated reader scheme. Children are given a ZPD code and can choose their own book using this code. When they have finished their chosen book, they complete a quiz in class before deciding on their next book. The more quizzes children complete (correctly) the higher their ZPD code. It has been a great success so far!

Spellings will be taught online this term via Spelling Shed. Please see your child's homework book for log in details.

Science

Children will be extending their knowledge on living things. Over the next few weeks they will learn how to classify different creatures and how important it is for scientists to be able to do this. They will have a go at creating a classification key using something very different from creatures! Later on in the year the children will develop their knowledge and understanding of lifecycles, building on previous learning in Year 2.

History

Our topic this term is the Anglo-Saxons. This links to our prior learning of the Romans and Vikings. Children will learn about the invasion of the Anglo-Saxons and how they settled in Britain. They will look at a range of artefacts whilst discovering details of Sutton Hoo. They will also explore the introduction of Christianity during Anglo-Saxon time and will end the topic learning about King Alfred .

Geography

Our mapping topic will help children learn how to read and use a map; focussing on compass points, grid references and contours. They will look at UK maps as well as maps of the wider world.

Art

Children will be learning all about Van Gough and his style of painting. They will explore painting with both water colours and acrylic paints before attempting to replicate one of Van Gough's most famous paintings.

PE

A coach will be teaching the children football skills this half term. In addition to new skills, children will also learn the importance of teamwork and fair play.

Music

Through Charanga children will be learning about ABBA! They will be learning to sing and perform the classic 'Mamma Mia'
